Description
This 40-hour course prepares unit leaders for basic backpacking and wilderness camping trips. Topics include: leadership, trek planning, equipment, food, health and safety, map and compass, awards, and conservation. Leaders completing sessions I, II, and III receive a patch and numbered card.
Units planning to earn High Adventure Awards must have a trained adult with a current card accompanying the trip.
HALTT cards are renewed every four years by attending the HALF-Day HALTT Retraining Course.
HALTT Session I weeknight session covers:
- Exposure/Protection from weather
- Studies of Hyperthermia and Hypothermia
- Discussions of HALTT, Water Trek, and Specialist training
- Location: Northminster Presbyterian Church, 4324 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Can Diego, CA
HALTT Session II Saturday covers:
- Preparation, equipment, and leadership for High Adventure outings
- Health, Safety, and Mountain Miseries
- Food: planning, purchasing, packaging, and preparation
- Trekking: peaks to deserts, awards, and permits
- Trail: Finding, keeping, communications, customs, courtesies, and conservation
- Location: Northminster Presbyterian Church, 4324 Clairemont Mesa Blvd, Can Diego, CA
HALTT Session III weekend session covers:
- Backpack hike
- Map and Compass
- Discussions on boots, bears, packs, pack repair, stoves and trail building
- Location: Mataguay Scout Ranch for backpack overnighter

Fee
- $10 per participant -- Must be paid online (cash not accepted)
- This one time fee covers sessions I, II and III.

NOTE: Sessions I and II are attended by both HALTT and Water Trek students. Session III is specific to HALTT.
